I attempted to send $500 US to a friend in Mexico. Remitly promised a quick transaction with no fees and a fabulous exchange rate to Mexican pesos.
After 12 hours I received a request for an image of the recipient's identification. At that point, I started getting cold feet, but my Mexican friend sent an image and I uploaded that to Remitly's app. The next day I discovered Remitly had made two (2) $500 remittances to Mexico. They offered no solution for cancelling the second one (which was at a less-favorable exchange rate).
Their customer service agents claim that Remitly uses an automated system that cannot make mistakes. Obviously someone made a mistake. (Automated systems make all kinds of mistakes.
We read about them every day. Do you want to entrust confidential information to a company that makes mistakes and doesn't take responsibility for them?)
